Higgins Armoury Museum board votes to transfer collection to Worcester Art Museum
An unfortunate outcome!
A last-ditch attempt to block plans to close the Higgins Armory Museum failed Wednesday after the museum’s board of incorporators voted overwhelmingly to transfer the prized collection of arms and armor to the nearby Worcester Art Museum.
Higgins leaders have said that the museum’s endowment is too small to support its operations and maintain its 82 year-old steel-and-glass building. Clarinda “Rindy” Higgins, granddaughter of late museum founder John Woodman Higgins, could not rally the 70-some incorporators to vote down the plan during a meeting that stretched into early evening at the Barber Avenue museum.
The plan has been hailed by both institutions as a way to keep the collection in Worcester after the Higgins closes Dec. 31. The Worcester Art Museum will open an exhibition featuring some of the works early next year.
